Satras in Assam for Competetive Exams

Satras in Assam are unique monastic institutions that have played a pivotal role in the religious, social, and cultural life of the region, particularly for competitive exams related to Assamese history and culture.

What are Satras?

Definition

Satras are Vaishnavite monasteries or hermitages, established by the great 15th-16th century Assamese saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva and his disciples.

Purpose

They serve as centers for the propagation and practice of the Ekasarana Dharma (Neo-Vaishnavite movement), emphasizing devotion to a single God, Lord Krishna/Vishnu.

Etymology

The word 'Satra' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'sattra,' meaning an assembly or a gathering, often for religious purposes.

Historical Significance & Evolution

Founder

Primarily founded by Srimanta Sankardeva and later expanded by his disciples, notably Madhavdeva, Damodardeva, and Harideva.

Location

Initially established in Majuli (the world's largest river island) and other parts of Assam. Majuli became the hub of Satra culture.

Royal Patronage

Received significant patronage from Ahom kings, which helped in their establishment and expansion across the Brahmaputra Valley.

Reformative Role

They were instrumental in spreading a casteless and egalitarian form of devotion, challenging existing social hierarchies.

Jorhat District (Majuli Satras - Cultural Heritage)
